As we all know, methanol is the simplest saturated monohydric alcohol with the structural formula of CH3OH. It is also called "xylol" or "Xylin" because it is first found in dry distillation wood. However, only about 1kg of methanol can be obtained by decomposing and distilling 60~80kg wood, and the output is very low. Before the 1930s, almost all methanol was produced by wood distillation. At that time, the global annual output of methanol was only 45000 tons, which was far from meeting the growing demand for methanol consumption.
Since Western scientists first used hydrogen and carbon monoxide to prepare methanol under high temperature and high pressure, and continuously improved and matured the manufacturing process, the production scale of methanol has been increasing, further expanding the consumption range of methanol. As we all know, methanol is the basic raw material and important solvent for a variety of organic products. It is widely used in organic synthesis, dyes, medicine, coatings, national defense and other industries. It is an important basic organic raw material next to olefins and aromatics.
Deuterated methanol refers to that deuterium atoms replace hydrogen atoms on methanol. Since there are four hydrogen atoms on methanol, the degree of substitution by deuterium atoms will vary due to the process itself. The mole percentage of deuterium atoms in total deuterated methanol is called deuterium degree. It is slightly different from methanol in physical properties. The relative molecular weight is 36 (32 for methanol), the boiling point is 65.4 ℃ (64.7 ℃ for methanol) at normal temperature and pressure, and the density is slightly heavier than that of methanol by 0.888g/ml (0.8g/ml for methanol). The chemical properties of the two are basically the same.
